Home Pickled Eggs

When I was first introduced to pickled eggs at the home of The Sephardic Table, I think I was perplexed.  Forgetting for a moment that pickling preserves as well as, if not better than, refrigeration, I hesitantly tried one of these purple eggs and instantly loved the delicate balance of sweet and acidic flavors carried by this colorful little egg.  One bite had me sold.  I asked for the recipe and made a a [...]

Indian Spiced Sweet Potato Latkes

Food is incredibly influential.  At the best of times, cuisine can unite families, communities and even nations, keeping memories and traditions alive for hundreds of years.  At other times, the things we do (or don’t) eat, can divisive or polarizing.  Pushing that culinary envelope has a time and a place, so make sure you’re not offending the memory of a family member if you decide to shake things up.

Easy Apple Pie

I’m not one to make dessert.  I don’t have a sweet tooth and more often than not I’d rather end the meal with a savory note.  That said, I love apple pie.  There’s something about piping hot apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream that says “all is right in the world” and brings that ultimate comfort food feeling the coldest of nights.  I love the creamy texture of caramelized apples [...]

Kedgeree – Creamy Rice with Smoked Fish

There has been a lot of talk of Downton Abbey recently so when I saw it was available for free via Amazon Prime earlier today, I decided to watch the first episode.  Set in the 1930s, the show opens with a staff of three dozen maids, footmen and cooks preparing the Abby before the family wake.  It’s a quintessential portrayal of upper class British life at the time.  For breakfast, the cook rushes to [...]

Sunday Breakfast: Bibimbap

My relationship with The Food Network has been a funny one.  With time, I’ve come to love “Iron Chef” and “Diner’s, Drive in’s and Dives”, but when the network and I first met, I wanted to spend my day learning from the Ina Garten’s and Tyler Florence’s of the world.  Perhaps it was a brief between-work transition that exposed me to the differences between daytime and nighttime on the Food [...]

Protein Rich, Personal Pita Pizzas

I didn’t enjoy the movie Eat, Pray, Love.  I don’t think I saw the whole thing, in fact I recall being pleased that our viewing was interrupted by a visitor at the door or a waking child.  Nonetheless, the Eat section of the movie was my favorite by far.  More than once, we have replicated that scene where Julia Roberts dines on asparagus decorated with a drizzle of olive oil, hard-boiled [...]

Falafel Flavored Quinoa Burgers

The leftover dilemma arrives every week.  Some time between lunch and dinner time on Sunday I realize the fridge is full of food but I don’t want to re-eat Friday night dinner for the next three or four meals.  Combining bok choy with some other veggies will give us a great stir fry for tomorrow night and Tuesday will be BBQ chicken pizza but when all said and done, I [...]

Green Shakshuka for Breakfast

As we stroll into the second half of 2012, I share this milestone with you – this is my 50th blot post.  It has been a struggle to write for the last few weeks and my literary inspiration has been more technology/social media focused recently and this did not seem like the platform for that!  Excuses aside and I am getting back to it.  This weekend we host our first [...]

Whole Wheat Pretzel Dough Slider Buns

Fairly often, I’ll open the fridge, stare at the shelves and wonder what to make.  Elaborate menus ideas will fly through my mind before I snap back to reality and remember I just about have time to grab a peanut butter sandwich before I run out of the door.  When I saw a pound of ground beef sitting, waiting to be transformed into a meal-for-two, I started thinking bar food! [...]

Turkey-Stuffed Portobello Mushroom Burgers

Food is fuel.  We eat to function, but food is also pleasure.  If food was only fuel, we’d be happy with a bowl of rice and steamed vegetables day in, day out.  Food is fuel, but good food in entertainment.  My wife has been out of town this week, and I have been slowly nursing the Mushroom-Turkey Soup I made on Monday twice a day.  Without a family to cook [...]

Turkey and Leek Pie, inspired by Jamie Oliver

Turkey’s are big. More often than not, there’s more leftover turkey than you want to see. Our 25lb bird is a little big and there’s limit to the number of turkey sandwiches, turkey salad and turkey soup that you can eat in the month of November. I don’t break a sweat thinking about cooking a Thanksgiving meal, we host a four-course dinner every single Friday night.  It’s the leftover turkey [...]

Lemon Thyme Chicken Tenders

For the second time this week, I share a chicken dish but these flavors could could just as easily be applied to tofu, tempeh or perhaps salmon.  Thyme is a very versatile herb but it’s not often that I use it as a primary flavor, but this dish, like many others, was born from that moment when I opened the door of the refrigerator and saw chicken, lemons and thyme.

Tyler Florence inspired Swedish Meatballs

I am a Tyler Florence Fan. I like his approach to food, I share his love for travel, and I really hope that one day I’ll have his kitchen. Until then, perhaps I will make do with saving up for some Tyler Florence Cookware. During the summer of last year, having moved to a new town, I was looking for work I spent many an hour watching The Food Network [...]
